LIQUID GLASS PRODUCTION

Liquid glass is one of the most widely used products in industry. It is an alkaline silicate solution, often referred to as "silicate adhesive." STEKLOLUKS products are utilized not only in industrial manufacturing but also in construction and the oil production industry.

The high demand for liquid glass is explained by the combination of its performance properties. Below are the key ones:

HIGH ADHESION

Silicate solutions provide strong bonding with various surfaces. Due to this, liquid glass is used as a base component in numerous adhesive and binding formulations.

RESISTANCE TO HIGH TEMPERATURES

Liquid glass is heat-resistant and is not a combustible material, even when in direct contact with an open flame. Once applied to a surface, it imparts fire-resistant properties to the material.

It is worth noting that potassium liquid glass does not create glare on treated substrates, which is particularly important for exterior work.

ANTISEPTIC EFFECT

Due to its high alkalinity (solution pH of approximately 12–13), liquid glass possesses pronounced antiseptic properties. It prevents the development of fungi, mold, and rot processes. This is precisely why silicate solutions are used in paint and varnish materials and for wood impregnation.

LIQUID GLASS PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY

At first glance, the process of manufacturing silicate solutions seems simple; however, in practice, the quality of the final product depends directly on the precise adherence to all technological stages.
At the initial stage, quartz raw materials are crushed and mixed with soda (sodium bicarbonate), potash (potassium carbonate), as well as sodium or potassium sulfates—depending on the type of liquid glass required. Four main varieties are distinguished:
  • Sodium;
  • Potassium;
  • Sodium-potassium;
  • Potassium-sodium.
The prepared mixture is fused into a monolithic mass at a temperature of approximately 1200°C, forming a silicate lump (cullet). Next, the lump is dissolved in an autoclave for 1–2 hours at a temperature of 135–165°C and a pressure of about 3–7 atm. Hot water and so-called "live steam" are used for dissolution.

Despite the name, liquid glass is not related to ordinary glass—the silicate lump dissolves well in water, especially at elevated temperatures and pressures.

QUALITY CONTROL AND FINISHING
In the next stage, the hot silicate solution is pumped into settling tanks, where it is cooled and stirred. Primary quality control of the product is conducted here.

Based on the results, STEKLOLUKS technologists adjust the density and composition of the solution.

If necessary, per the customer's requirements, the liquid glass is additionally purified using a filter press. The finished product is then packed into agreed-upon containers and shipped to the client at the final destination.
