Liquid glass is an aqueous solution of sodium or potassium silicate.

It is used in industry as a binder and a protective component.
Such a mixture:

  • Effectively bonds various materials and reinforces adhesive compositions;
  • Increases the strength of substrates — reduces concrete porosity and increases the load-bearing capacity;
  • Protects against moisture and aggressive environments;
  • Possesses antiseptic properties, preventing the formation of mold and fungi.

APPLICATIONS

The wide range of physicochemical properties of silicate materials allows for their use in diverse sectors—from civil and industrial engineering to oil refining, metallurgy, and the production of specialized formulations.
  • Foundry & Casting

  • Building Materials Manufacturing

  • Soil Stabilization

  • Waterproofing

  • Coating Formulations

  • Silicate Paints

  • Detergent Manufacturing

  • Pulp & Paper Industry

Sodium and Potassium Liquid Glass
Liquid glass (sodium or potassium silicate) is a viscous material that hardens upon contact with air, forming a durable protective coating.

Despite its low production cost, it possesses a wide range of high-performance characteristics.

What is the difference between potassium and sodium liquid glass?

The difference is determined by the raw material—sodium silicate or potassium silicate—which shapes the properties of the final solution.

Sodium Liquid Glass:

  • More affordable in terms of price;
  • Widely used in construction and industry;
  • Universal for the majority of tasks.

Potassium Liquid Glass is used when the following are critical:

  • Refractoriness — a higher softening and melting point;
  • Surface purity — the absence of white streaks (efflorescence) upon contact with air;
  • Enhanced water resistance of the coating.
Additionally, potassium liquid glass is applied in the production of welding electrodes and fluxes.
If you are unsure which type of liquid glass is suitable for your needs, STEKLOLUX specialists will select the optimal solution tailored to your production technology.

How to Choose Liquid Glass

Key characteristics of liquid glass:
  • Silicate module — the ratio of $SiO_2$ to $Na_2O$ or $K_2O$;
  • Concentration — the content of silica and alkaline oxide;
  • Density — depends on the composition of the solution;
  • Viscosity — affects the technological feasibility of the application;
  • Transparency and color — depend on the purity of the raw materials and the production technology of the silicate lump (cullet).
These parameters are interconnected and must be selected for a specific technological process.
General correlations:
  • As the module increases, the viscosity typically increases.
  • As the density increases, the viscosity also increases.
  • However, if the module increases while the silica content remains constant, the viscosity decreases.
To ensure that the product meets your requirements, STEKLOLUX offers a trial batch of up to 5 kg. This allows you to test the liquid glass under real-world conditions and precisely determine the necessary parameters.

What determines the price of liquid glass

When deciding to purchase liquid glass, keep the following in mind:
  • Type

    Liquid glass made from sodium silicate is more affordable than potassium silicate.

  • Module

    The lower the module relative to the 3.0 mark, the more expensive the material becomes—this is due to the increased cost of sodium alkali during the production process.

  • Density

    The higher the density of the material, the higher the price, as more target components and less water are required.
In addition, filtered material—which is transparent—will cost more than the standard grade. Finally, the total order price is influenced by logistics: the cost of packaging and transportation.
